The classes include several introductory subjects such as Research Ethics, Epidemiology, and Systematic Reviews. In addition to the introductory courses, I was able to take more specialised classes like Health Promotion, Interpreting Development, Health Systems, and Investing in Global Health and Development. These wide range of classes allowed me to have a broad understanding of public health. While these classes taught me technical knowledge, I also learned many useful skills. I learned how to write grants, literature and systematic reviews, briefs, public health proposals, and how to conduct thorough research. The Masters of Public Health emphasised greatly on teamwork. Many of the projects in the programme were group projects that fostered teamwork. Show less

The National Institutes of Health is the health research branch of the US government. While I was there, I performed research in a melanoma research laboratory. In addition to this research, I researched the correlation between the rates of new breast cancer cases rates per 100,000 and each country with a Human Development Index (HDI) rating. Show less

    • Westat

      Jun 2014 - Aug 2014
      Data Processor

Westat is a private research organization. I have worked on several government projects simultaneously. My primary project was to process the data for the Title I/II survey. The survey is to determine the effect of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and strive to allow equal access of education to all students. My secondary project was the Research and Evaluation of Education in Science and Engineering (REESE) project. These tasks were to clean data that had been processed with a program. This “cleaning” was to correct any errors that the program made. The REESE project was responsible for the allocation of grant funds based on scientific studies presented. My final task was to assist with the organization of the IRS ITB project. My job was to receive the surveys, organize the surveys, and prepare them for processing. Show less

      Yuva for Sewa Intern

Sewa International is a non-profit organization operating on the concept of sewa, the Sanskrit word for selfless service. The Yuva for Sewa program allows American students to go to India to perform service. My particular project was at at Rangadore Memorial Hospital. At the hospital, I shadowed doctors and was able to see different kinds of procedures. I witnessed a live birth, a C-section, and a variety of other medical procedures. On top of the shadowing, I created a pamphlet about nutrition for expecting mothers that was to be distributed in monthly meetings about expecting mothers. I also worked on a manual about midwifery for the nurses in the gynecology and obstetrics department. As part of the sewa portion of the program, we volunteered in the hospital by painting the pediatric chemotherapy ward, creating a report about customer service at reception, and processing medical records. I also taught spoken English at a Hosakerehalli Government School. Show less

    • Project Mongolia

      Jun 2017 - Jun 2017
      Project Coordinator

Project Mongolia is a charitable society based at Edinburgh University that was set up in February 2011. The First Aid Project is a team that goes out to Ulaanbaatar primarily working in the Ger district of the capital teaching first aid. Many people have very little awareness of basic first aid training, and this project aims to provide training that could enhance living and working conditions. For the trip, my team and I organised several events to raise money. In the end, we raised over 3,000 British pounds to be used on accommodation, in-country travel, and various supplies. The other preparation for the trip was first aid training. Our team went through an accelerated training program where we learned CPR, how to treat broken bones, burns, cuts, spine injuries, and how to evacuate a person who cannot walk. While we were in Mongolia, we traveled around teaching first aid to children and adults at camps, farms, and other organisations. We taught over 400 people first aid. During this time, I was responsible for the finances, tracking the finances, organizing events and travel, and coordinating with the local and international coordinators. Show less

    • Peace Corps

      Jul 2018 - Mar 2020
Clinic and Health HIV/AIDS Capacity Building Volunteer

Serving in the Peace Corps is a two-year commitment. For the first three months, I was in Molepolole, Botswana learning about the language, culture, health system, and how HIV/AIDS has affected the population. Part of that training included giving a presentation about malaria at a local clinic. After the training, I was placed at the District Health Management Team in Boteti Sub-District. Upon arriving in the village, I conducted a community assessment to determine the health needs. I worked on several large projects over many months while also helping out on one-time projects periodically during my service. One of my large, long term projects was my involvement in Supply Chain Management at the local clinics with the pharmacy technician and a site monitor with Chemonics International Inc. As a team, we organized store rooms, files, and ordering schedules at the clinics in my village. In addition to those activities, I assisted in several presentations to Health Education Assistants and Nursing Students on how to properly fill out a stock card. I was also the Co-Implementation Manager for the Committee for Supply Chain Management. One of my duties was to help train the next cohort of volunteers in supply chain management and assist volunteers in implementing projects in their communities. In my community, I worked with students aged 10-18. At the senior school, I facilitated a support group for teenage mothers who returned to school after giving birth. We focused on life skills such as self-confidence and self-acceptance as well as career planning. The club invited several speakers in fields they wanted to pursue. Our village had a teen club, sponsored by Sentebale. Each month, I assisted the other facilitators with organizing the venue, food, reimbursements. Occasionally, I contributed to the lesson planning with games and presentations. Show less
