      Transit Planning Fellow

      This internship was a competitive fellowship that I applied for and received. It provided funding for a portion of my master’s degree studies while I worked part time during the school year. I worked closely with the consulting firm Gannett Fleming and their subsidiary GeoDecisions on the development and refinement of the Transit Boardings Estimation and Simulation Tool (TBEST) for transit ridership modeling and forecasting.I developed training guides and tutorials for using TBEST and incorporating its use in state-mandated transit development plans for local transit agencies in Florida. I also created best practices guidance for Federal Transit New Starts and Small Starts grant applicants at the local government level in the state. Show less

      Capital Projects and Service Planning Intern

      I drafted plans and documentation for the final design team to incorporate bus stop locations along the alignment of the now-completed Orange MAX light rail line. I presented, reviewed and discussed plans in meetings with internal and external stakeholders including local and state government officials.Additionally, I created an initial hierarchy of performance metrics for restoring frequent bus service that had previously been reduced due to an economic downturn and budget pressures.       I was selected for and completed the agency’s Core Development Program – an intensive full-time 24-month multi-disciplinary rotational training program. I worked in planning, maintenance, construction inspection and management, traffic engineering and operations, hydraulics and stormwater, materials testing, bridge and structures, and roadway design.I spent time with the office of Innovative Project Delivery (IPD) evaluating design-build proposals for the first diverging diamond interchange (DDI) in Virginia, with the Office of Public-Private Partnerships (OP3), and the Virginia Division office of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).After my rotational assignments I worked primarily as a roadway designer developing plans, specifications, and estimates, and supporting project-related public outreach. My work included a bridge replacement, urban widening of a divided 4 lane roadway, interchange design, guardrail safety, and the now-completed Virginia Capital Trail between Richmond and Williamsburg.       I managed the design and construction of millions of dollars in transportation capital projects in one of the western United States’ fastest growing communities. My projects included delivery of Bend’s accessibility and neighborhood street safety programs, enhanced roadway crossings, and a network of bicycle boulevards/greenways.I led multi-disciplinary teams of staff, engineering consultants, and construction contractors while handling critical and complex negotiations ranging from right of way acquisition to professional services and construction contracts. I created and procured Bend’s first transportation on-call contracts and successfully defended the City against contractor claims in arbitration proceedings.I represented the City’s and taxpayers’ interests in frequently coordinating and negotiating with other government agencies in the region, a Class I freight railroad operator, and private utility companies. I constantly met with and present to diverse stakeholders such as community members, neighborhood associations, businesses, advisory committees, news media, senior management, and elected officials.
