The internship entailed study of Operations & Maintenance of various equipments in a Thermal plant and to study steps taken while carrying out maintenance activity under aegis of Mechanical Maintenance Department. I was attached to, for period of week each, to Boiler Team, Turbine Team, On-site and Off-site team.I was required to do a Case Study on Barring of Steam Turbine which helped me to understand the process of barring of steam turbine and the conditions under which barring is done.   Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) is a systematic approach to determine maintenance requirements of a plant. At Essar Power RCM is part of Product Safety Management policy implemented at the power plant. Failure Mode Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) method was used for conducting RCM for steam turbine and its auxiliaries. A criticality index sheet was prepared after completion of FMECA; following was concluded:• Super Critical: Turbine• Critical: Condenser• Semi-Critical: Main Oil Pump, Auxiliary Oil Pump, Emergency Oil Pump and Steam Jet Air Ejector.• Non-Critical: Condensate Extraction Pumps (A, B & C), Ball Collector Pump, Jacking Oil Pump (A&B), Mist Eliminator fan (A&B) & Oil Centrifuge. The following observations & suggestions were made:1. The jacketed tube type condenser used sea water in closed loop for condensation of steam. The condensate level was monitored and maintained above 2600 mm so as to ensure efficient working of condenser. It was diagnosed that the corrosion is taking place in the condenser tubes due to sludge formation because of sea water usage. Suggested that the Ball Collector pump, used for cleaning the tubes once a month, be used twice / thrice a month for 3 months to clear the observed sludge. After 3 months, the ball collector pump to be operated every twenty days & the condenser pipes to be checked for sludge formation.2. The coupling of the Auxiliary Oil Pump had failed and replaced twice. The reason for this coupling failure was rise in vibrations due to unbalancing of shafts. Suggested that vibration check be carried out whenever the pump was operated and possibility of using Vibration Sensor for process control be evaluated. 3. For auxiliaries such as Main Oil Pump, Emergency Oil Pump, Jack Oil Pump and Oil Centrifuge, Preventive maintenance practices and technique in use were found to be optimal and no change was required in the current maintenance strategy.
