The United States is one of the few countries in the world without federally mandated paid maternity leave. Instead, the only national requirement is 12 weeks of unpaid leave, which many simply cannot afford to take.I was fortunate to receive 12 weeks of paid leave at WashU—an opportunity that should be the standard, not a privilege. Paid leave isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for the well-being of parents, children, AND the overall health of our society.
