My activity at TUM focused on the development of an experimental Master Thesis on Wheel Aerodynamics. 25% of the aerodynamic drag of a passenger car is due to wheels and underbody. Optimizing wheel design for aerodynamics would lead to more efficient vehicles, regardless of the power source used. This justifies an intense parametric analysis on wheel design to relate geometrical features to aerodynamic performance. Promising results have been found with an extensive simulation activity and then validated with wind tunnel tests.At last, a software has been developed to pave the way for automatic aerodynamic design optimization for treads. It relies on an innovative nomenclature proposed in the work, coupled with the ETRTO standard for wheel size nomenclature.During my stay at TUM, I had the opportunity to start learning German.
