  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Office of Minority Health and Health Equity (OMHHE) offers internship opportunities for eligible undergraduate and graduate students, providing meaningful experiences in public health settings. One such opportunity is the Future Public Health Leaders Program (FPHLP), part of the CDC John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars (Lewis Scholars) Program. FPHLP is designed to prepare a diverse group of students to pursue careers in public health, ensuring that the American public benefits from a more diverse and better-trained public health workforce.During my time in the structured educational program at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, I engaged in several activities designed to build my public health skills and expand my professional opportunities. My key experiences included:-Attended structured educational programming twice a week, which focused on developing public health skills and exploring professional opportunities.-Conducted and presented a group research project at the 2022 CDC Showcase and Expo. Our project focused on the relationship between the educational system and LGBTQ+ youth health.-Collaborated with a team of 8 members to develop and lead a PowerPoint presentation, student-led discussion, and an alumni panel/Q&A session for other scholars and staff.   In my role focused on developing curriculum and content for Implicit Bias Awareness and Mitigation training for Nursing students, I took on several key responsibilities to ensure the training was engaging and effective.   The mission of the Ventura County Public Health Tobacco Education and Prevention Program (TEPP) is to enhance the health of all Ventura County residents by reducing illness and premature death caused by tobacco use. TEPP collaborates with community-based organizations and local, state, and health agencies to promote healthy lifestyles and work towards a tobacco-free Ventura County. By engaging residents, key community partners, and elected leaders, TEPP aims to increase community awareness of the impact of tobacco use and implement strategies to reduce its appeal. State and local policies play a crucial role in reducing tobacco influences such as secondhand smoke and youth access to tobacco. California, Unincorporated Ventura County, and several cities within the county have policies to address these issues.
