  Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine is a growing and exciting speciality that has, until recently, been inherently restricted to postgraduates.This specialist field is not part of the core curriculum for medical education defined by the GMC and so is not formally taught, but has a great deal to offer to committed undergraduate students with a special interest. Such individuals are ultimately the next generation of pre-hospital clinicians.The North West Air Ambulance has developed the concept of an Educational Institute and we have worked collaboratively with them to create this initiative.We all share the same passion for the provision of medical care to patients before they reach an Emergency Department. We believe that there is room for committed individuals to undergo a structured learning process that will allow them relevant, unrestricted access to pre-hospital care before they qualify. This is what we aim to develop.With the backing of the region’s three medical schools, we are creating a programme that will educate and involve students in the management of both common and challenging emergencies in the unpredictable out-of-hospital environment.
