Novelty included design and manufacture of (i) high-pressure water-jet quenching rig to generate residual stress field with high triaxiality in laboratory specimens in a controlled and repeatable manner; (ii) novel figure-of-eight shaped side punching tool to generate residual stress field with both high triaxiality and high plastic strain in compact tension C(T) specimen, for subsequent creep study.Identifying for first time influence of plasticity on deep-hole drilling residual stress measurement technique. As a direct result of my PhD work, I published 5 journal and 6 conference articles. • University of Bristol

      Nov 2005 - Aug 2010
      Postdoctoral Research Associate

Postdoc research within Solid Mechanics Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering included in general simulation of residual stress from mechanical and thermo-mechanical processes using ABAQUS finite element package as well as measurement of residual stress using non-destructive (neutron diffraction, Synchrotron X-ray), semi-destructive (centre-hole drilling, deep-hole drilling) and destructive (wide-slot) techniques. FEA modelling of semi-destructive techniques.Specific projects I worked on included:(1) COMPACT Nov 05 - Dec 08Providing research leadership and management in “COMPACT project, EU FP6 STREP programme of which University of Bristol was a Work Package Leader. Overseeing and producing annual project management reports, monthly project activity reports and overseeing the compilation of annual cost statements.Initiating and conducting core research to progress and advance accurate measurement methods of residual stress in both small and large engineering components, within the aerospace and power sectors. The outputs of my research are utilised by over 20 members of my research group, and pave the way for future developments on a range of projects.(2) Rolls Royce Jan 09 - Oct 09Rolls Royce research project in finite element validation of deep-hole drilling residual stress measurement method applied in complex components, studying influence of local geometry and plasticity.Undertake & lead several industrial R&D projects conducted under UoB Systems Performance Centre. (3) KTS projects Nov 09 - Aug 10Carrying out numerical simulation of the complex DHD measurement method using finite element analyses to advice on the corrective procedure during non-conventional measurements and for complex geometries. Writing applications for peer reviewed neutron and synchrotron beam-time (and associated travel and consumables costs) through competitive user programmes, at both national and international facilities. Sept 2010 - Jun 2014
      Senior Development Engineer

R&D of equipment, analyses and methodologies within field of solid mechanics exploited by VEQTER. Design and development of a high quality residual stress database.R&D within solid mechanics and evaluation and validation of a commercial residual stress measurement X-ray equipment. Maintenance, further development and sales of a high quality residual stress database.

      Dec 2012 - Jul 2018

Research project in collaboration with IGCAR (Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research), BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre) and several UK universities is to understand how weld residual stresses influence crack initiation in components operating at high temperature. In particular, to understand type IV creep failure that occurs in the intercritical region of heat affected zone in a dissimilar metal welded joint. My role as senior postdoc includes networking closely with all UK and Indian partners and research staff connected with the project as well as supervising and supporting 3 PhD students at Bristol. In addition I assisted in teaching delivery and enhance student experience in undergraduate programmes, as well as running support classes and feedback sessions, delivering small-group support teaching, setting/marking assessments, exam marking, point of contact for research project.
