  + The project focus was overcoming limitations of current platinum-based chemotherapy by improving anticancer drug delivery and increasing specificity for cancer cells through the use of gold nanoparticles and DNA sequences.+ Research drew on knowledge and skills from synthetic, analytical and biological chemistry. + Managed the direction of the research, establishing targets and working methodically and effectively to reach these.+ Devised a novel method for gold nanoparticle synthesis and attached an anticancer drug to their surface, which demonstrated increased drug loading and improved physical stability compared with previous studies. Publications and awardsOriginal research articles in Inorganica Chimica Acta (2012, 393, 328-333), the American Chemical Society Journal Inorganic Chemistry (2012, 51, 3490-7) and Acta Crystallographica Section E: Structure Reports Online (Vol. 68, Part 3, o787).Author on an international patent (Patent No. WO 2010/139942) and a journal perspective in Dalton Transactions (2010, 39, 8113-8127). Awarded first prize for written and oral presentation of Ph.D. research at the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Day, University of Strathclyde – May 2012. Show less
