  I participated in a student internship through Furman University called "Fuel the Community". Fuel is a healthy-eating program designed to enrich the relationship that we have with food, and show people that a healthy lifestyle does not require intense self-restriction. As obesity rates rise in the U.S., so do the misconceptions people have about dieting, losing weight, and the motives behind weight-loss. My job is to visit establishments that have expressed interest in the the program (Miracle Hill Renewal, Miracle Hill Children's home, Greer Relief Center, North Greenville Christian Ministry, and more!), and teach residents the fundamentals of nutrition, the two-way relationship between mental and physical health, and how to incorporate healthfulness into our lives without draining our time/bank accounts. The Fuel program is informative, but also a hand-on experience that involves cooking demonstrations/classes and other interactive activities. Show less
