Intelligent Energy Holdings plc is an energy technology group which develops hydrogen fuel cell power systems for the global automotive, consumer electronics, distributed power and generation markets. My role involves the testing of new materials and components for the R&D group, this work entails:• Enhancing knowledge of metallurgy/ metals and alloys – Stainless Steel, Titanium & Aluminium alloys – for example in light-weight applications such as UAV’s / drones.• Developing knowledge of coatings and coating process – PVD, CVD, Thermal spray, Spray-bake & Electroplating – critical for electrical efficiency and corrosion protection applications. • Establishing bespoke characterisation methods for materials and components in fuel cell stack and systems – mechanical, electrical and gas flow test methods.• Teamwork – in particular in the introduction of new materials into the R&D products.• Managing my workload, delivering reports and feedback in a timely manner.• Identifying, and building relationships with, potential suppliers of components and test houses.• Attaining a detailed understanding of the construction and operation of the fuel cell stack technologies, through materials testing and operation of fuel cell stacks.• Technical lead responsible for transferring knowledge and training of ex-situ characterisation methods to external parties.Part of my role in the materials team constitutes failure analysis and contamination identification using diagnostic techniques such as: optical microscopy, SEM-EDX, Auger or XPS depth profiling, XRF, Vickers hardness testing and Taber Abrasion testing. Another part of my role requires working with the operations department in identifying and putting in place test methods for batch verification of suppliers’ materials.Management of test equipment includes Calibration, Repair, Training and supervision, Design of test fixtures, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) & Risk Assessments.
