Sept 2014 - Jun 2015Luce ScholarAs a Luce Scholar, conducted research on business and human rights issues, such as the extraterritorial application of human rights law to Thai companies in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos. Investigated the unlawful eviction of Cambodian farmers by a Thai sugar company; wrote memoranda and coordinated advocacy meetings with government officials with the farmers. Researched the impact of a proposed dam on the rights of displaced Burmese communities.

Feb 2016 - May 2018ResearcherAssisted Committee member Ms. Cleveland in preparing for the Committee’s review of Member States’ compliance with their obligations under the Covenant by preparing memoranda analyzing previous reports issued by the Committee, NGOs, U.N. treaty bodies, and alternative sources. Helped adjudicate cases that came before the Committee by writing legal memoranda that examined relevant cases, drafting history, and answered questions of law.

Wrote memoranda on death penalty advocacy in West Africa and attended and monitored criminal trials of indigent defendants.

Sept 2016 - May 2017Student AttorneyContributed to a war crimes investigation in the Central African Republic through legal research and writing of memoranda on evidentiary standards in Central Africa and at the ICC; a mapping exercise of mass graves; and the proper procedure for documenting evidence of war crimes. Authored a 33-page case file. Conducted over three dozen interviews with family members of the victims, UN officials, CAR government officers, and NGO staffers in-country. Contributed to a two-day workshop for over fifty U.N. peacekeepers and local lawyers. Show less

Feb 2017 - Dec 2017Conducted legal research to support a criminal case against former Gambian dictator Yahya Jammeh with research relating to extradition, human trafficking, pillaging of natural resources, and criminal trials in The Gambia. Research included inquiries using both humanitarian and human rights law. Monitored and provided analysis of the Security Council’s sessions on a range of issues before the Council. Conducted research on attacks on healthcare facilities in armed conflict by interviewing 14 of the Council’s members, writing findings in legal memorandum examining the practice under international humanitarian law. Wrote memoranda and attended strategy meetings on an advocacy campaign against arm sales to Saudi Arabia.

Drafted a submission to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention regarding the detention of Rohingya on Bhasan Char island; researched the right to mental health for a report on the Rohingya genocide; and conducted research and wrote two news releases concerning the use of landmines in Myanmar under international humanitarian law. Investigated the arbitrary arrest of student protesters in Myanmar, publishing findings in the report, “Our Demands are for All Students.” Provided research, editing, and legal review on other Fortify Rights publications, including reports, press releases, and statements.
