  Research Assistant

  As a research assistant at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University’s Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research I worked on the isolation of 5GT gene related to flavonoid synthesis in grapevine in Vitis rotundifolia (muscadine grape). I recognized problems in assignments and procedures, made pertinent observations in order to draw conclusions, and made suggestions for improvement of diagnostic procedures. I routinely performed diagnostic laboratory protocols independently. All duties were performed in a manner that consistently demonstrated fairness, cooperation, and respect toward co-workers, customers, office visitors, and others. As result of my work, for the first time a full-length cDNA clone of the 5GT gene from muscadine grapes was isolated. I gained proficiency as a genetics laboratory technician doing RNA and DNA extraction from in vitro cells and plant sources, gel electrophoresis, cDNA synthesis, PCR, gene cloning, gene amplification, primer designing, and BLAST Analysis of sequence data.   During the summer of 2015 I participated in a short term internship with a wine production facility in South Africa. The company that I worked directed with is Seven Sisters under the Heritage Link Brands Company. The main goal was to leverage the Seven Sisters wine brand’s empowering story to not only draw people to visit the Seven Sisters Farm but also to create it as one of the most desired travel destinations in South Africa. Throughout the internship I worked on brand awareness, tourist relations, and marketing strategies.
