      My PhD research is built around the qualitative as well as quantitative description of phase structures generated in a massively arrayed multi-phase phase microfluidic liquid-liquid extractor and separator using the Finite Element Methods. The research is sponsored by an industry partner whose business involves the manufacture and scale-up of the extractor for use in applications such as biofuel synthesis degumming and removal of impurities from crude vegetable oils, extraction of rare-earth elements etc. Using finite element analysis, models of the extractor are built and studied in order to gain in-depth insight into phases evolve and how that affects fluidic and mass transfer performance. The performance of the extractor for efficient separations and extractions is investigated under varying process conditions, feedstock composition and fluid properties. Show less
