      Participated for two summers (June-August 1998 and June-August 1999) in the National Institutes of Health/National Center for Research Resources-funded Minority High School Student Research Apprentice Program at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology under the mentorship of Dr. Marvin T. Williams and Ms. Mary Alice Freeney. Duties:-Performed routine laboratory tests to study the mechanisms of action and clinical implications of the hepatic cytochrome P450 system.-Learned and applied basic biochemistry laboratory research skills, including gas chromatography, spectrophotometry, western blotting techniques, centrifuge techniques, surgical techniques, Agarose gel electrophoresis, and micropipetting. Accomplishments:-Learned the pharmacokinetics of aspirin and acetaminophen on hepatotoxicity -Participated in planning experiments as well as evaluating test results-Monitored laboratory equipment performance-Ensured proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents-Presented study results at the 1998 and 1999 Summer Student Biomedical Research Symposia Show less

      Co-developed and implemented the Girls 4 HOPE (Health, Opportunities, Prevention and Education) Capacity Building Assistance Program, funded by a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Division of Adolescent and School Health. Girls 4 HOPE built the capacity of community-based organizations and school-based health centers to initiate and improve HIV prevention programs for African American and Latina teen girls (13-18 years old) and their parents. Provided education on and advocated nationally for evidence-based, comprehensive sexuality education for/with youth and youth-serving professionals. Advocated for increased support and resources for Ryan White CARE Act Part D Programs with women and youth living with and at increased risk for HIV. Wrote the Research Updates corner of the AIDS Alliance for Children, Youth, and Families' newsletter to elevate the need for better inclusion of underrepresented women in HIV clinical research. Initiated an internship program; established relationships with university career services staff to market and promote the internship program; recruited, screened, interviewed, and selected intern candidates; and served as an internship preceptor/supervisor for three undergraduate and graduate (community health nursing) student interns.
