The data revealed a structure never seen before, and which still has no explanation in astronomical circles. Odd Radio Circles (aka: ORCs) appear to be a new class of extra-galactic object; my thesis concentrates on the only known “double” ORC, and 3 x candidate ORC systems. Show less

      CSIRO Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship

In the Summer of 2017 / 2018 I was awarded a scholarship and employed by CSIRO in their Undergraduate Vacation Scholarships program by CSIRO Astronomy & Space Science (CASS). The Vacation Scholarship Program allows students the opportunity to work on real-world projects in a leading R&D organisation.Project Title: Visualising the ASKAP pipeline.Project Duration:10 weeks from 27 November 2017 to 9 February 2018.Project Description:The ASKAP telescope uses a high-performance processing pipeline that runs on the Galaxy supercomputer at the Pawsey Centre in Perth. This pipeline produces images and catalogues that are made publicly available through the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive. My project was to enhance the outputs of the pipeline to include better presentation and visualisation of the results. This included exploration of the science-oriented display of images and/or individual detections.Project Duties and Tasks:- Learn and use the ASKAP processing pipeline.- Devise suitable visualisations of data products and/or processing metrics.- Work with the pipeline development team to implement successful visualisations in the operational pipeline. Subject coordination for Professional Experience at the Western Sydney University Sydney City campus. Professional Experience is a final year capstone subject, where students work in groups on real-world software projects sourced from external companies, or Western Sydney University itself. Under supervision from faculty or industry mentors, students define requirements, analyse, design, and implement software systems for the client. In this role I am responsible for organising appropriate clients and projects, arranging the students into groups, acquiring staff, delivering lectures and tutorials, supervising the final presentations, and reporting results back to the University administrative staff. I am also one of the mentors during the semester, guiding groups with project management skills towards successful completion of the subject. Show less During my PhD, I have contributed to the study of Odd Radio Circles (ORCs), first identified during the 2019 ASKAP Phase 1 Pilot Survey of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU). ORCs have generated enormous interest in the scientific community, and appear to be a new class of astronomical object. The ORC 2 and ORC 3 "pair" are unique due to their close proximity on the sky. By investigating their morphology, I am helping to unravel the science of these peculiar objects. I have gained the skills required to handle large data sets and derive meaningful insights, while contributing to innovative scientific research. Show less From July 2018, I have taught into various undergraduate subjects in the School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences (previously named the School of Computing, Engineering, and Mathematics). As a casual tutor I am responsible for running tutorial and practical classes for the subjects listed below. Classes involve directing and assisting students, marking weekly tutorials and assignments, responding to emails, and other subject administrative tasks.-- Third year subjects: - Professional Experience - Operating Systems Programming (C programming language) - Distributed Systems & Programming (C programming language) - Computer Networks & Internets (CISCO)-- Second year subjects: - Software Engineering Fundamentals (Python and Django) - Programming Techniques (Java) - Technologies for Web Applications (HMTL, CSS, PHP, MySQL) - Computer Networking (CISCO) - The Cosmos in Perspective: Information & Life-- First year subjects: - Programming Fundamentals (Java) Show less The Contact Service Centre (CSC) is under the purview of the Office of the Vice-President, People and Advancement, Western Sydney University, and offers prospective student's their first contact experience with western. The primary role involved assisting prospective Domestic and International students with course advice and other information relevant to undergraduate and postgraduate course available at Western Sydney University. KPI's are monitored externally to ensure high levels of support are maintained. The CSC is also engaged by other stakeholder within the University to handle first level support requests. These stakeholders include Parking, the Office of Estate and Commercial, Facilities, Badanami enquiries (Indigenous support), and tutorial registration. In addition, the CSC also conducts outbound call campaigns, outbound mail campaigns, and event staffing assistance for various departments within the University. In my time at the CSC I was involved in all aspects of the department, and was exposed to working in all roles.
