      Here I worked in the Shark Specialist Group section of the IUCN. The task at hand was collecting and compiling fisheries information on 60 different endemic shark and ray species along the western coast of Africa (Morocco to Angola) to create species specific red list reports. I was specifically tasked with compiling all the relevant information on the number of artisanal, industrial and semi industrial fishing vessels operating in these waters, what their by-catch was and what type of fishing gear was used.       Employed by the University of Exeter to work with Cornwall Council's Environmental Growth team to evaluate the previous environmental growth strategy. I am specifically helping the team with the data collection from publicly available sources and statistical and spatial analyses.Reviewing the MMO bye-laws and regulations relating to the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly managed inshore and nearshore fisheries; making subjective decisions on what percentage of Cornwall's waters fall under 'positive management'. The results of this research have been transcribed into shape files from which spatial statistics are extracted using both GIS and R. The results of this research are translated into a three year report that will be used by local MPs at the Government level. Show less

      Western Antarctic Peninsula: CCAMLR subarea 48.1: The deployment duration is around 3.5 months long.• Here I have proved an ability to work in an extremely hazardous and geographically isolated environment, with weather conditions that change unpredictably, from 7 meter waves to -50 degrees temperatures. • Main tasks: Quantifying fishery impacts through REM and in-person bird survey / fin-fish bycatch surveys.Carrying out stock assessments of Antarctic Krill. Weekly biometric samples of Krill are carried out where sex ratio, length measurements, maturity and feeding colour recordings are taken. Show less

      The Centre of Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) is an Executive Agency of the UK governments DEFRA. I provide specialist scientific advice to government bodies (MMO, NRW) on the impact anthropogenic activities have on marine ecosystems, specifically fish & fisheries. Also spend 30-40% of my time involved in Cefas R&D projects for policy and publication.Research has so far involved- The role UK MPA networks play in blue carbon storage and conservation- Small-scale fisher displacement mapping- iVMS mapping of the UK small-scale fleet.- Pyramids of Life: Sustainable fisheries management from a nutrient perspective.
