  Project title: Pluviometric Regime in the Alcântara Launch Center and in the Paraíba Valley Abstract: There are global precipitation datasets that can be used for precipitation studies. The advantage of these data is that they have a very good spatial and temporal resolution, in addition to being flawless. However, these data need to be calibrated and validated against local observations. The purpose of this IC was to update a study carried out in 2008, with the inclusion of newly available data (GPCP and TRMM). The work started in May 2014 and the renovation was requested and granted. This research was part of the activities of the Aerospace Meteorology Research Group. Precipitation data were evaluated by looking for trends for the regime of the evaluated sites. The research project was a partnership of Unesp and the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) in the city of São José dos Campos. Show less

  Academic Training- Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (Ciências Sem fronteiras)As a research intern I developed my activities with the following goals: Goal 1: To comprehend concepts of fluvial engineering and ecohydraulics, including sediment transport, flow dynamics, shear stress, open channel hydraulics, river and estuary mechanics, and interactions with aquatic ecosystem processes. Goal 2: To observe the coupled processes by which shoreline habitats (sediments, oyster reefs, vegetation) interact with the dominant hydraulic environment.Goal 3: To query how such interaction influences recruitment of mangrove species into restored sites. I assisted with a new research project investigating shoreline restoration in a Florida bar-built estuary. My day-to-day tasks included reading and synthesis of primary literature, collection of field data, developing novel data collection techniques, processing and analysis of samples, data analysis, including code development for data processing, and writing of research results. My supervisor assigned readings of benchmark academic literature, which we discussed in order to promote deep understanding of the field. Show less

  Project title: Toxicity of algal cells exposed to phosphorus and zinc to the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia silvestrii Abstract: The contamination of aquatic environments by metals has increased all over the world. Zinc metal is a micronutrient for organisms, however in high concentrations it can be toxic. Phosphorus is one of the most important nutrients that regulate the growth of planktonic organisms in aquatic ecosystems. It is known that the availability and retention of metals by phytoplankton is influenced by the presence of nutrients, such as phosphorus. Diet is an important route of metal exposure for zooplanktonic organisms. In this sense, to better understand the impact of metals on aquatic bodies with different concentrations of nutrients, it is necessary to elucidate the interaction between metals and nutrients regarding their effect on biota. The general objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the alga Raphidocelis subcapitata exposed to different combinations of phosphorus and zinc on the microcrustacean Ceriodaphnia silvestrii. The chlorophycea R. subcapitata was exposed to phosphorus and zinc at different concentrations. Later, algal cells were offered as food to the microcrustacean, in chronic toxicity tests. The bionomic variables (embryonic development time, age at first reproduction, number of eggs and newborns produced by females, and adult survival) of the zooplankton species were evaluated.
