Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Scientific evidence reveals that EMDR therapy is a very effective and efficient. Mostrar menos

This specialisation examines the relationship between brain and behavior, which entails cognitive functioning.Central elements of the study are; diagnosis and treatment of (developmental) disorders as a result of deficient functioning of the brain. Brain abnormalities may occur in many different ways. For example by impaired development of the nervous system, by an accident or pathological processes (eg; vascular disorders, epilepsy, dementia). Disturbances in the functioning of the brains can express themselves in the following cognitive domains: perception, speech, language, literacy and numeracy, attention, memory, motor skills, planning and behavior. Neuropsychologists study these in conjunction with the functioning of the brain. A neuropsychologist conducts a neuropsychological examination and subsequently advises the patient about consequences of these disabilities and therapeutic possibilities. Mostrar menos

Research: Pain in Dementia SubtypeAdminister neuropsychological test to elderly with a cognitive impairmentWriting Thesis: Pain in Dementia Subtypes and its Relation to Behavioural SymptomsAbstract: Previous studies concerning pain in dementia suggest that the distinct neuropathology in patients with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), vascular dementia (VaD) and mixed dementia (MD) may influence pain perception in different ways. The ability to report pain is diminished in elderly with dementia. In addition, undiagnosed and undertreated pain may be one of the causes of behavioral symptoms associated with dementia. The present study examined the differences in the presence of pain, pain intensity and pain affect between subtypes of dementia and investigated whether dementia subtype and aggressive and depressive symptoms predict the degree of pain intensity.Participants included 34 patients with AD and 14 patients with MD, patients with VaD were excluded due to insufficient sample size. Pain intensity and affect were measured by means of the Brief Pain Inventory self-report scale. The Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire was filled-in by a spouse or relative to assess aggressive and depressive symptoms. Data has been analyzed by means of ANOVA, Chi-square, Mann-Whitney U tests and a multinomial logistic regression analyses. Results showed that patients with MD reported higher pain intensity than patients with AD (U= 76.0, p=.05). MD was associated with high pain intensity whereas AD was associated with low pain intensity (b=3.71, p=.04) and no pain (b=3.81, p=.02). Depressive symptoms were associated with a lower degree of pain intensity (b=4.12, p=.03).Present findings support the leading theory that distinct neuropathology in dementia subtypes impacts the perception of pain. Results indicate that patients with MD perceive higher pain intensity than patients with AD. Mostrar menos
