    • Castaway's Backpackers

      Jan 1991 - Jan 2004
      Proprietor

Castaway's Backpackers was a family business. It started with a flop house called the Hi-Way Inn (sic). I interested the rest of the family in buying this property and later I suggested we convert it to a backpackers. We started a travel agency Castaway's Travel to handle the tour and travel bookings from the hostel. In June 1995 I made my first online sale which was 2 Quicksilver Outer Great Barrier Reef Cruises and 2 Down Under Tours Kuranda Day trips for a grand total of AUD 440. (I remember it distinctly.)After a couple of years of selling travel online I decided to pursue a career in IT.The family purchased another hostel, Uptop Downunder, and did well for most of the 90s. However with the coming of S11 and SARS there was a major downturn and we were forced to sell Uptop in 2004 to a property developer who demolished it.At this time my sister and I left the business. My mother retained the majority ownership of Castaway's until her death in 2015. Castaway's was then sold. Show less

Effectively, I operated as a cost-recovery freelancer within the University. I was responsible for capturing requirements, producing a functional spec and an estimate, getting approval for same (or varying and re-presenting), developing, and testing the application, I did not roll code into production, I handed it over to IT&R who owned the production servers. I dealt with any ongoing maintenance issues, feature enhancements and bug fixes thereafter. I used COSMIC-FFP for estimation purposes which worked well for the nature of the projects I was assigned - typically business process workflow systems. Show less

    • University of Canterbury

      Mar 2013 - Apr 2017
      PhD Student

My thesis is entitled "Exploratory Moral Code: Formalizing Normative Decisions Using Non-Modal Deontic Logic and Tiered Utility."It centres on the question: how would a robot or AI make a moral decision? This requires the formalization of normative decisions so they can be made in a computer. I use a "non-modal deontic logic" and a concept of "tiered utility" in my formalization. This is ethically informed by the "triple theory" of Derek Parfit. Triple theory is a hybrid moral theory that fuses elements of Kantian deontology, Sidgwickian utilitiarianism and Scanlonian contractualism. Show less
