  Develop algorithm to jointly retrieve cloud and precipitation properties using ground-based remote sensing instruments, e.g., radar, lidar, microwave radiometer. The retrieval product was then used to evaluate global climate model (GCM) precipitation simulations in the process-level. Based on the evaluation, potential improvements were proposed for modelers, which are easy to implement.

  Using the data from ARM Azores field campaign, the nighttime low cloud microphysical properties were retrieved as well as drizzle properties below cloud base. The impact of drizzle below cloud base to cloud microphysical properties retrieval was also investigated.A conceptual model was proposed to characterize the profiles of liquid potential temperature and total water mixing ratio under coupled and decoupled marine boundary layers and in drizzling and non-drizzling conditions.
