      My research focuses on maternal health during pregnancy. I study the placenta, an organ that is the main site of nutrient and waste exchange between the fetus and the mother during pregnancy. In pregnancy complications, there can be placental damage which disrupts the exchange system, and can lead to the release of inflammatory factors into the maternal blood stream. Our lab focuses on an inflammatory factor called mitochondrial DNA. My research tries to understand how placental damage induces changes in mtDNA. Show less
