The firm focused on providing innovative commercial insurance solutions in what was then a rapidly changing insurance marketplace.As President, I managed all day-to-day operations and handled relationships with insurance underwriters.Through our experience operating a commercial insurance agency, Judd and I recognized that changes in the workers compensation insurance industry provided an opportunity to found a new company focused on that niche.   GUARD Financial Group (now Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies and First Security Bank) was an insurance and banking holding company that my husband Y. Judd Shoval and I founded in 1982. Originally a property and casualty insurance organization specializing in workers’ compensation insurance, the company exhibited steady, controlled growth and evolved into a significant regional carrier.By 2007, the firm was licensed to write insurance in 43 states and the District of Columbia, writing in excess of 35,000 policies per year, in addition to banking activities through its GUARD Security Bank subsidiary. A substantial portion of the insurance business was written for customers of the preeminent national payroll processors, Paychex and ADP, utilizing proprietary software that allowed for automatic deduction of insurance premiums from customers’ payroll accounts.As President, I oversaw all day-to-day operations from the founding of the firm until its sale in 2007 to the Tel Aviv stock exchange-listed Clal Insurance Enterprises Holdings, Ltd. Thereafter I continued as President for a planned three-year transition until 2010. As part of the sale, GUARD Security Bank was renamed First Security Bank and sold to a separate investor group.In 2012, Clal Insurance Enterprise Holdings, Ltd. sold the insurance operations to Berkshire Hathaway, who renamed it Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies.   First Peoples National Bank (now a part of Wachovia) was a single-location community bank my husband Judd and I acquired with a group of local investors. Over the period we owned the bank, we significantly modernized systems, expanded deposits and lending, and added branches.In 1995, First Union Bank purchased First Peoples. First Union was eventually acquired by Wachovia.
