      Dissertation title: Perfluoroarylated Cyclopentadienones: Synthesis, Characterizationand Polymerization Synthesis of highly fluorinated bis-cyclopentadienone monomer:o Designed and synthesized fluorine rich cyclopentadiene monomer precursor through aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. o Studied a new solvent system for fluorine-based aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction. o Developed a novel catalytic oxidation method for fluorinated cyclopentadiene system. o Characterized the fluorinated monomer through 1H, 19F NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and x-ray crystallography. Synthesis of novel diyne monomer: o Synthesized diyne monomer through metal catalyzed sonogashira coupling reaction.o Characterized the diyene monomer through 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and x-ray crystallography. Diels-Alder polymerization of perfluoroarylated cyclopentadienone and diyne:o Studied different conditions of the Diels-Alder polymerization reaction. Examined the effect of solvent and temperature on the molecular weight of the polymer. o Characterized the polymer through 1H and 19F spectroscopy, SEC, TGA and DSC.  Synthesis of fluorinated self-healing polymer:o Synthesized fluorinated cyclopentadiene monomer system through nucleophilic substitution reaction.o Synthesized bis-maleimide monomer system by condensation reaction of 4,4’-diaminodiphenyl ether and maleic anhydride. o Characterized the monomers through 1H, 13C and 19F NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. o Synthesized the self-healing polymer through the Diels-Alder reaction of fluorinated cyclopentadiene and bis-maleimide.o Characterized the polymer through 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy, SEC, TGA and DSC. o Studied the thermal reversibility of the polymer through Flash Vacuum Thermolysis.        Chemical modification and characterization of soft wood kraft lignin to create bio-based thermoplastic materials with high temperature stability: (Project funded by Solvay Specialty Chemicals) • Studied the thermal stability of soft wood kraft lignin. • Developed a novel green synthetic route to control the reactivity of soft wood kraft lignin. • Developed a soft wood kraft lignin-based elevated temperature stable poly(arylene sulfone) system. • Characterized chemically modified kraft lignin via 1H and 13C NMR, and FT-IR spectroscopy, SEC, TGA, and DSC.  Towards the development of soft wood kraft lignin-based carbon fibers: (Project funded by Domtar Corporation) • Fractionated soft wood kraft lignin through dissolution in acetone to obtain a low molecular weight fraction. • Propargylated acetone soluble soft wood kraft lignin through nucleophilic substitution reaction. • Developed a novel procedure to generated high molecular weight bio-polymer by heating the propargylated lignin at elevated temperature. • Performed the thermal polymerization of propargylated lignin in twin screw extruder for the development of lignin based carbon fibers. • Developed a novel lignin-based high molecular weight polymer via oxidative polymerization of propargylated lignin through Glaser Hay coupling. • Characterized the chemically modified lignin through 1H, 13C NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEC, TGA, DSC. Dissolution of cellulose in in molten inorganic salt hydrates: • Studied the dissolution mechanism of cellulose in zinc chloride hydrate. • Designed and developed a turbidimetric titration instrument to study the dissolution mechanism of cellulose in aqueous solution of zinc chloride hydrate. • Characterized the regenerated cellulose by SEC and TGA.
