However, they are often not tailored and persuasive enough to be effective in changing lifestyle behaviors. Because all individuals have different needs and preferences, it is essential to understand what works for whom and why. Only then can effective eHealth tools be offered that, combined, support the health and the well-being of people in older age. This dissertation focused on a specific tool: the Embodied Conversational Agent (ECA). The aim was to provide insight into how to design and evaluate ECAs that support healthy living. Through a series of studies (co-design sessions with older adults, qualitative experiments, and an evaluation), we identified the different factors that explain ECAs potential success for healthy ageing. I was involved in the evaluation pilot of the Tired-of-Cancer application, a program which support patients with cancer to learn to cope with their fatigue. The ToC application is part of the Health Psychology Research program, which aims to contribute to knowledge about psychological and social processes that enable or impede people’s adaptation to chronic somatic illness. As part of the internship, I also developed a protocol for the implementation and evaluation of logdata in eHealth applications. Show less

My research mainly focuses on the development and evaluation of eHealth technologies to support health behavior change. As a PhD student I am working at the department Consumption and Healthy Lifestyles of the WUR. Here, I work together with an interdisciplinary team on a project called PACO. We design and evaluate an Embodied Conversational Agent for coaching community-dwelling elderly towards dietary behaviour change. We aim to gain fundamental insights into the acceptance, working mechanisms and persuasiveness of ECAs for health behavior change.
