      Advanced Topics in Modern Engineering

In order to make the most of my final year as a student, I decided to conclude my master's degree with a summer course in Vienna. There I really got to appreciate to work in a multicultural group. I love to stay in touch with both professors and friends I made over there.

Activities and Societies: CQS Group T Racing Team To make my Master's year more challenging I participated in on of Group T's renowned postgraduate programs. For two years I worked in a student team that designed and build a ecological racing car, based on the chassis of a Citroën 2CV. New inventions and general improvements were thoroughly tested during the professional racing competitions we took part in.

At the KU Leuven, campus Group T, there are a couple of unique postgraduate projects which are in fact an extension of the final master year in Industrial Engineering. The CQS Group T Racing Team consist of a group of engineering students who participate as first and only student team in a professional racing cup with a high-tech version of the classic Citroën 2CV.Each member works for two full years in the offices and workplace in Kessel-lo, Leuven. During the post-graduate program (spread over 2 years) new technologies are implemented in the car, which acts as innovation platform for many different companies. Key technologies are, amongst others, a bio-degradable body produced from natural resin, flax fiber and cork core material with the vacuum infusion technique. Second, an alternative drivetrain powered by bio-ethanol (E85) is used to keep our competitors on a safe distance behind. This fuel asks for special surface treatments in the engine, custom designed cooling, a different injection system, special ethanol resistant materials and safety precautions.I specifically chose this project over others like Group T’s Solar car, or even the normal graduation path without any project. This is because this way I was able to gather valuable experience of working in a professional environment, combined with the extensive hands-on experience which lacks in a standard engineering education. The freedom to be creative to solve challenging problems is what I liked best in the CQS Group T Racing Team. Show less

      Guest Lecturer at INNES

As alumnus of the summerschool at INNES I was honored to be invited as guest lecturer by the professor whose course I participated in. My goal was twofold. Firstly I wanted to prepare the last-year students for the switch from being an engineering student to employee (i.e. applying for a job, writing a resume and cover letter, transferable skills). Also, I presented real life examples about working in a high tech company and challenges that are offered to new graduate engineers. Secondly the whole experience was a personal challenge. I wanted to improve my presentation skills in general as I used to think presenting wasn't one of my strong suits. After the course I was asked if I could broaden my curricula and come back for two full days at next year's summerschool.
