      Jul 2018 - Dec 2018
      Smart Grids R&D Engineer

At EDF I worked focusing on the development of a platform for demonstration of Interoperability, aiming the use cases from TDX-ASSIST Project (http://www.tdx-assist.eu/)I had the opportunity to work with international standards, mainly those under the Smart Grid framework, by building information model profiles from the IEC Common Information Model (CIM), a common model for data structure within Smart Grid environments. Moreover, I used specifications from IEC 61968-100 to implement interfaces of services and un ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) under a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA). The services were implemented using SOAP Web Services, exposed to clients by means of WSDL documents and used IEC 61968-100 Common Message Envelope to deliver information objects defined by the created CIM profiles. Finally, I documented existing standards, namely, IEC 62325-451 series, using the Use Case methodology for Power Systems, based on IEC 61559 and IEC 62913 series of standards, and I mapped TDX-ASSIST Use Cases into the Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM).The result of the work was highly praised by my mentors and colleagues in the EDF department (evaluation sheets attached). Apr 2019 - Mar 2020
      Smart Grids Researcher

Together with the Smart Grids Group (GREI), I worked on adapting and harmonizing an existing project to international standards for Smart Grids, using the knowledge of systems development that I obtained during my internship at EDF.For that, I formalized all the engineering of the Multi-Agent Automatic Restoration System (MARS) to deal with standardized data models (following IEC standards), by specifying system requirements, use cases, messages exchanged between actors and adopting international methodologies for development of Smart Grids systems. The result of this work was reported in my final course work, which I provide in the link below (in Portuguese only). The work also served as inspiration for a scientific article by me sent to IEEE Smart Grids Transactions journal (link soon). I lead the team of Software Engineers in migrating and evolving a legacy Machine Learning-centered software into a scalable, distributed system. I am responsible for architectural design, code pipeline automation, MLOps, and facilitating cross-team collaboration to enhance software performance and maintainability. I work in direct contact with company's key stakeholders, including Senior Data Scientists, Data Engineers, SREs and the board of directors.Key Contributions:* I led the transformation of legacy systems into scalable Machine Learning solutions, utilizing tools such as Dask and Kubernetes for distributed processing (training, inference) and data manipulation.* Segregated code into modular repositories, enabling streamlined collaboration between teams.* Instrumented code using Elastic Stack for real-time debugging and monitoring in a Kubernetes-based environment, improving reliability and system performance.* Drove CI/CD automation efforts, reducing deployment time, human errors and increasing software resilience.* I led the creation of an internal Experimentation Platform, which accelerated hypothesis testing in production in a robust and predictable manner. Show less As Lead DevOps Engineer, I transformed the company's legacy AWS infrastructure, enhancing security, scalability, and performance. I focused on cloud architecture, security automation, and leading a cross-functional team in managing DevOps operations.Key Contributions:* Overhauled legacy AWS infrastructure into a highly scalable, secure, and automated system using Kubernetes and Terraform.* Led the Cloud Infrastructure and Cybersecurity Team, implementing best practices for cloud-native projects and DevOps security measures.* Automated CI/CD pipelines, improved incident response, and enhanced security processes, ensuring compliance and efficiency.* Introduced Dask Gateway for scalable data processing in a Kubernetes cluster, improving system performance and cost-effectiveness. Show less As a Data Engineer, I was responsible for migrating cloud infrastructure to infrastructure as code (IaC) and developing a data validation tool, Deirokay, which reduced errors in data pipelines and improved overall system efficiency.Key Contributions:* Developed and open-sourced Deirokay, a Python library for structured data validation, ensuring data integrity and reducing pipeline errors.* Built and optimized scalable ETL pipelines using Apache Airflow, improving data processing reliability and performance.* Managed distributed data processing using Dask on Kubernetes, optimizing resource usage for big data workloads.* Automated infrastructure processes using IaC with Terraform, streamlining operational efficiency and reducing manual interventions. At Nerdwallet, I lead the initiative to migrate applications and databases from Aptible to AWS, enhancing scalability and enabling a global infrastructure.I plan and collaborate within a cross-functional team to make sure production apps are smoothly migrated from one provider to the other, without any downtimes or security downgrade. The project has impact in the entire organization since it consists of migrating applications that are the company's main driver of profits: any planning errors or inefficient architectures can impact thousands of end users. For that, we implement the best practices for system reliability and security, extensive monitoring using Datadog, A/B testing-based releases, feature flags and a highly robust pipeline for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CI/CD).I work closely with other senior engineers to plan and implement the Cloud architecture from Infrastructure (using mostly AWS CDK for Typescript) to the application's source code (heavily Typescript-based). I also provide guidance to ensure that technical solutions meet organization’s goals. Show less At vArmour, I focus on building and optimizing scalable data platforms. My work involves leveraging Python and PySpark to synchronize workload information between the customer’s application and external asset management systems, such as ServiceNow (see https://www.varmour.com/partners/servicenow-integration/), ensuring performance and system reliability. The project lasted 6 months and as a result we obtained a significant improvement in the user experience (who could now manage their assets transparently through two distinct systems), the consolidation of a partnership between vArmour and other companies (which led to subsequent projects) and the attraction of a new user base as a result of this partnership.Key Contributions:* Designed and implemented a data platform to synchronize workload information between internal systems and ServiceNow.* Led initiatives to improve the developer experience and code quality, such as proposing new development standards and workflows and implementing CI/CD pipelines and other event-based automations* Automated and optimized data pipelines using Python and Spark, improving system efficiency.
