    • Rochester regional health

      Sept 2015 - Jun 2018
      New visions intern

This program allowed me to work at Rochester General Hospital for half of the day, and the other half I would take classes back at my school. While at the hospital, I worked in 4 different departments including ambulatory surgery, clinical research, a pediatric floor, and a general surgery floor. I learned patient care skills including bedside manner, how to take vitals, how to perform ECGs, and medical communication skills. I also learned laberatory skills such as cell culturing, creating and changing media, filtration, and lab safety procedures. Working in these different departments gave me a unique and holistic perspective on what doctors, engineers, and scientists do and how it impacts patients, nurses, and families. Show less

    • Cytocybernetics

      Feb 2018 - May 2018
      Research intern

While I was there, the main project involved drug safety screening. In order to screen, we need healthy, consistent action potentials. Cytocybernetics couples cardiac myocytes to a dynamic clamp system in order to form these action potentials. My job was culturing the cardiac myocytes, creating and changing media, and performing data analysis after the system has been coupled and run. Specific skills I learned included pipetting, using an analytical balance, properly cleaning lab equipment (graduated cylinders, beakers, incubators, flasks, etc.), performing calculations on excel, measuring pH, filtering, and practicing sterile techniques. Working for such a large, successful company lead me to learn a lot about communication, independence, leadership, hospitality, and customer service skills. This was an amazing opportunity that has helped shaped my work ethic and perspective in positive ways; lets spread the magic! Show less
