    • Integration Into Research Grant

      Oct 2009 - Oct 2010
      Undergraduate researcher

Research project on “Tracing sulphur, nitrogen and heavy metals' atmospheric sources in the industrial area of Sines”.This project aimed to investigate the temporal variation of pollutants using lichens as biomonitors. It involved thecollection of data and its laboratorial analysis, as well as statistical analysis and interpretation of its results. A final reportwas then presented to the funding body for evaluation of the project success. The project's results were also presentedduring the National Ecology Society conference, 2010, in poster format. Show less

      Jan 2010 - Jan 2011
      Undergraduate researcher

Investigation project on the “Identification of the origin of major pollution sources using spatial mapping of sulphurisotopes in the industrial area of Sines”. This project consisted in spatially tracing pollution sources using data collectedfrom lichen sampling and isotopical analyses. This was achieved by combining both statistical and spatial analysis andmaps were produced using the ArcGIS software to map the pollutants distribution in the area of study as well as theirdifferent sources according to isotopic signature. A final report and a poster were submitted to the funding body forevaluation of the project success. Show less

    • British Exploring Society

      Jan 2013 - Mar 2013
      Explorer

Participated in a scientific expedition to the Jebel Qamar mountains of Dhofar, in Oman. The expedition's objective was to carry a biodiversity assessment of Wadi Sayq in order to aid in the conservation of the Arabian Leopard (Panthera pardus nimr). To achieve this comprehensive field surveys were carried everyday and I was able to consolidate my knowledge and gain experience in bird, bat, herptofauna, dragonfly and butterfly surveys, as well as invertebrate samples collection. Small mammal traps and camera traps were also placed in order to assess the diversity of mammalian fauna. Also, I have developed my own personal project during the expedition, a Habitat Suitability Index (HSI) for the Arabian Leopard. For that I had to plan all the field work and coordinate it with the remaining field surveys, as well as organize people into doing this field work. I have also organized and analised the collected data in order to produce the HSI.All in all, the whole expedition was more than a great challenge, as it was filled with practical field work which as given me plenty of experience and a great sense of accomplishment, as I know that the data we have collected will contribute to the conservation of the ecosystem we explored.
