    • Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S)

      Jan 2009 - Jan 2010
Maritime Capability Trials and Assessment - Head of the Submarine Platform Group

As the Head of the Submarine Platform Group I successfully led a large team responsible for continued engagement with industry partners to guide and advise them through the acceptance process required for new equipment coming into service within the RN submarine Fleet. In this role I ensured that user and system requirements were met, through continuous trial attendance ashore and at sea, and through the provision of sound recommendations to ensure the RN achieved value for money.

    • Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S)

      Sept 2010 - Feb 2013
DES Ships Maritime Combat Systems Underwater Electronic Warfare Project Team Requirements Manager

I successfully formulated the user and system requirements for future ship and submarine sonar systems. Through protracted negotiation with contractors, I formally determined and scrutinised acceptance criteria to accept equipment into service on behalf of the Royal Navy.

    • Babcock International Group

      Jan 2013 - Jan 2014
Seconded to Babcock International, Programme Manager, Submarine Projects

This was a major operational leadership role (of around 75 Royal Navy and civilian engineers) at the heart of the UK’s global defence. I was responsible for the turnaround and deployment of the Royal Navy’s nuclear powered, cruise missile armed Trafalgar class submarines, a crucial asset. Keeping them working at peak efficiency was a non-negotiable national priority. Selected Achievements:• Improved the turnaround speed and the quality of repairs by clearly identifying ownership and negotiating a more equal sharing of labour between submarine crews and my engineers.• Solved major nuclear reactor and supporting system faults which posed significant risks to submarine operational programmes by deploying teams of specialists both in the UK and abroad.• Ensured repairs were completed quicker than originally estimated through streamlining the repair sequence thus meeting the Royal Navy’s deadlines without compromising nuclear safety. • Robustly managed the RN’s contract with Babcock International to ensure the company provided the service required within the stated response times. عرض أقل

    • Royal Navy

      Jan 2014 - Jan 2015
Head of Royal Navy/Royal Marines Recruiting for South West England and the Channel Islands

Selected Achievements:• Consistently achieved the highest UK National recruitment numbers, accounting for 23.5% of all recruit numbers across six recruitment areas.• Analysed the success of the area’s six recruiting offices and moved resources to those most likely to produce the best results, changing long established, traditional patterns. • Created innovative ways of marketing the Royal Navy as a career to the region’s young people, including initiatives to inspire interest among parents, building a culture that fostered higher recruitment rates. عرض أقل

    • Foreign and Commonwealth Office

      Jan 2016 - Jan 2017
Maritime Security Advisor (Yemen) (Commander, Royal Navy)

This was a unique post created by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office as a result of the conflict in Yemen. The UK Embassy in Yemen’s capital Sana’a had been displaced to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia. I advised two British Ambassadors and their respective teams on all implications for British interests related to the conflict on land and also originating from the maritime domain and threats to commercial shipping. Stakeholder management, organisation information flows, analysis of data, and presentation of findings and their importance were all crucial tasks.Selected Achievements:• Successfully co-ordinated international humanitarian relief efforts for Yemeni citizens by taking over the chairmanship of a UN forum with members including USAID, DfID/UKAid, King Salman Relief and other international NGOs.• Created a successful partnership to rebuild Yemen’s Coast Guard, designing the master strategy and implementation plan for use once the war ended, building on surviving infrastructure and providing new assets to fill operational gaps.• Rebuilt, restructured and turned around the performance of the Yemeni Coast Guard’s three surviving vessels and their crews at a UN base in Somalia, having negotiated UK Government funding. • Secured funding for the master strategy by negotiating with major NATO-allies’ Embassy Defence Attachés in Riyadh, agreeing funding to create a standardised and cohesive array of modern operational assets rather than a force built around obsolescent, donated vessels. • Managed an understandably difficult relationship with a Yemeni Government reeling from the conflict, overcoming initial friction, managing expectations and finally winning their agreement to my strategy. • Proved the role’s value to the FCO and wider UK Government regional influence, leading to an initial three-month extension of its fixed duration, and then agreement to a permanent replacement for the next 5 years. عرض أقل

    • Royal Navy

      Jan 2016 - Jan 2016
Head of Submarine Weapon Engineering Training, Royal Navy Submarine School/FOST (Fleet Operational S

In both of these roles I had the operational purpose of sustaining a pipeline of talent for the Royal Navy in one of its premier recruitment areas, ensuring some of its most important staff were trained to the highest standard and career paths were planned to increase retention. I was successful in these complementary HR and OD goals. At FOST my achievements included:• Improved morale, focus and results among students at FOST by adding an understanding of the UK’s strategic need for their roles, to high quality technical training. • Designed and delivered new channels of communication and information sharing between crews in training (for both the “Hunter-Killer” submarines and the nuclear deterrent “Bombers”), fostering a faster spread of best practice and continuous improvement. عرض أقل
