Responsible for a team of around 20 technical training experts providing training, assessment and further support to all UK nuclear power stations (PWR and AGR). Responsible for managing and delivering in depth training programmes to operations, engineering and technical staff, including reactor operators, simulator instructors and shift managers.During this post grew the teams output from around 30 thousand training hours to around 45 thousand, whilst improving the quality and relevance of training delivered. Show less Reactor Physics:Part of a team giving advice to operators on control rod movements and other plant maneuvers that can improve reactor performance, ensure compliance with numerous safety limits and make predictions of reactor power. Carrying out assessments to predict criticality, Xenon transients, fuel burnup, decay heats, shutdown margins, fission gas pressures and all other major physical processes related to advanced gas cooled reactor physics. Safety Case: Part of a team responsible maintaining station safety through; giving operational advice; writing and reviewing technical specifications; completing fault studies and periodic safety reviews; authoring and reviewing modification proposals to plant items, safety case structure, procedures; and more. Show less Attachments across three power stations within Maintenance, Technical and Safety, Operations and Engineering and an attachment at EDF Energy head office within Fuel Route Systems. Supplemented by training and experience in leading successful teams, communicating with influence and championing change and improvement.Learnt a great deal about engineering, the nuclear industry, safety, communication, teamwork and business acumen, and built connections and relationships with colleagues across EDF Energy. Project Engineering Placement

Involved in project to remove fuel from Dounreay fast breeder reactor. Between 2004 and 2007 £20 million worth of tooling (such as manipulator arms, grabs, milling tools) was designed and made based on estimations and assumptions made about the reactor's condition. Following draining of the liquid metal coolant many of these assumptions were found to be invalid. I was involved in reconfiguring, redesigning, reengineering and preparing for operation this and potentially new tooling based on the information we now have about the reactor's condition. Show less

Duly Authorised Person EDF Energy I was authorised to operate nuclear reactors and associated turbine/generators from the control room of Dungeness B. Under the site's licence, responsible for control and supervision of all operations that may affect nuclear safety on the reactor that I operated, in normal operating periods and fault/emergency situations such as reactor trips.

Senior Authorised Person (Electrical and Mechanical, High Voltage) EDF Energy I am authorised to apply necessary precautions to ensure personal safety from system derived hazards. This requires a thorough knowledge of: - plant and apparatus at nuclear sites (qualified at Dungeness and Hinkley Point B) - the hazards associated with substances such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide - EDF Energy company safety rules (electrical and mechanical) - relevant legislation e.g. electricity at work regulations 1989, health and safety at work act 1974… Show more I am authorised to apply necessary precautions to ensure personal safety from system derived hazards. This requires a thorough knowledge of: - plant and apparatus at nuclear sites (qualified at Dungeness and Hinkley Point B) - the hazards associated with substances such as hydrogen and carbon dioxide - EDF Energy company safety rules (electrical and mechanical) - relevant legislation e.g. electricity at work regulations 1989, health and safety at work act 1974. When enacting this role I ensure that electrical and mechanical hazards do not lead to danger to personnel, by applying appropriate mechanical and electrical isolations, amongst other precautions, and issuing safety documentation such as 'permits for work' and 'sanctions for test'.This follows approximately six months of training specific to the role, culminating in a two hour assessment panel with station Operations Managers, Safety Rules Champions, and a representative from EDF Energy's safety and regulatory division.
