      Refugee Tutor

One thing I wanted to do in terms of student involvement and volunteering at Johns Hopkins when I enrolled was creating an impact on something that was relatable to me. Upon starting in the Fall 2007, I looked up various organizations to volunteer with and fell in love with the Refugee Youth Project. As a daughter of a refugee who was given opportunities that my mother did not have, such as education assimilation for example, I wanted to give back my efforts to the city of Baltimore. Baltimore actually has one of the highest immigrant populations in the nation, so it would only be right to utilize my skill set of teaching and tutoring to improve the livelihood of refugee students and their families. I was cleared from my background check and started October 2007 and volunteered with the organization until my graduation in May 2013. Because of having my own mobility, I was able to expand where I tutored and reached at by outreaching to the schools of three schools in Baltimore city, but primarily at Moravia Elementary and Patterson High School.
