      Summer Intern

My experience as an intern at the Smart Cities Council employed the knowledge and skills I had learnt from my degree into a real-world context, where my work would aid in furthering the goals of the Council. My supervisor, Adam Beck tasked me with developing an evaluative model to measure the impact of the Council. This project involved a wider review of the literature on the value of data; how do different sectors measure impact; and how to correlate organisational impact with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Adam set a date for a roundtable meeting on January 19th between members, local council representatives and staff from within the organisation to present the impact assessment model. Apart from finding a set of impact assessment models I had to create a PowerPoint presentation, briefing note and questionnaire for the meeting. The feedback we gathered from this meeting helped us to further research to create a model which would be more accommodating to this feedback. Additionally, I was tasked with constructing a training module as a codex explaining the importance of impact evaluation, and why these models we presented would be the most suitable means of measuring the value of the Smart Cities Council. This internship as a whole has been an engaging, fulfilling and informative experience. I really appreciate the opportunity to work for an organisation which is so devoted towards directing its expertise on data to help local councils across Australia. I thank Adam for being open to answering all my questions, providing me guidance and being so accommodating to have meetings, what I have learnt from him and this experience has been invaluable and I will cherish throughout my career.
