Jul 2011 - Jul 2012CAE Support - Industrial PlacementA year long industrial placement in the CAE team based in Portsmouth. Main tasks included:1st and 2nd level support to users on Windows and UNIX environments, relating to software issues, emails and hardware faults. This included using a help desk system (BMC Remedy), phone calls and face to face. Backup management – Restoring of deleted data, weekly tape changes using NetBackup and backup schedule for the year.Software Installs/Licensing Setup – Installation of engineering software and driver updates on windows and UNIX environments. Setting up licensing variables and FLEXLM licensing.Hardware upgrades – RAM, graphics card and hardrive upgrades and changes.PC Imaging and IP address configuration – Image engineering PC’s to the corporate standard using ‘Ghost and Go’ or ‘SCCM’ and configure a fixed IP address to the correct VLAN.SQL commands - To run queries on parts in a database that need to be reprocessed. Windows 7 testing – Following a test plan to carry out installation of engineering software, to ensure that they are windows 7 compatible. Weekly teleconferences took place to update the rest of the team on my progress.Technical Documentation – Creating technical documents for other users to follow n the installation of software. Along with a document for the new placement student on how to use Astriums systems. Nagios Plugins – Creating basic UNIX scripts to be used as a nagios plugin to alert the department for low disk space or when a high number of ‘fin-waits’ appeared on the system.Video Conferences – Weekly videoconferences with other departments to discuss and inform them with project updates.Liasing with different department’s regularly to organise software installs, hardware upgrades, pc reimaging and IP address configuration.
