      Undergraduate Research Assitant

      • Conducted Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) analysis using procedures from the “Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater” on collected water samples from the University of Central Florida’s Green Roof Project that utilizes the Black and Gold Media.• Prepared all glassware and chemical reagents necessary to conduct the TKN analysis.• Analyzed obtained data and completed calculations of analyses on a weekly basis. Reports containing data and calculations were given to assigned University of Central Florida graduate student to be used within a Masters thesis.onducted Heterotrophic Plate Counting (HPC), Most Probable Number (MPN), and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) analyses on wastewater grab samples taken during different treatment processes obtained from a wastewater facility located in Orange County, Florida. The study was completed to monitor the performance of a developed product from IPT Company, Inc.• Created agar medium and prepared Petri dishes necessary for HPC analyses under sterile conditions using a Biological Safety Cabinet.• Compiled all project data from all team members into a master data spreadsheet and reported to the project supervisor on a weekly basis. Feb 2009 - May 2011
      Graduate Research Assistant

      • Conducted research concerning mass conservation and salinity transport of the Lower St. Johns River using ArcGIS 9.3 and ArcGIS 10, MATLAB, and SMS 10.0 and 10.1. Numerical modeling utilizing and comparing the Continuous and Discontinuous Galerkin Finite Element Methods were used to determine the flow interactions between the St. Johns River and coastal marshes.• Conducted extensive research and wrote a literature review for a future oil transport model created in the hp CHAMPS Laboratory inspired by the BP Oil Spill to aide in creating improved preventive measures. • Calibrate PraxSoft Nutrient Sensors used for nutrient monitoring of Nitrate (EPA Methods 353.1 and 353.3) and Phosphate (EPA Method 365.1) in assigned projects involved with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).• Monitor and analyze data retrieved from the PraxSoft Nutrient Sensors, PraxSoft Weather Stations, PraxSoft Flow Sensors, and PraxSoft Water Level Sensors transmitted through the use of Wireless Sensor Nodes (WSNs). Complete data analyses that aide in determining key relationships used to improve nutrient maintenance in agricultural practices and best management practices (BMPs) within residential communities.• Conduct field assessments to determine locations of future PraxSoft equipment installations after completing an extensive initial research study. Maintain installed instruments located in experimental sites by monitoring reagent usage and incoming results into the PraxSoft Web-based application database. These results are compared to those of obtained grab samples taken in accordance of standards set by federal and state quality assurance guidelines.• Compose technical reports of assigned ongoing projects containing analytical data results and conclusions given to clients, including the FDEP.• Create in-depth procedures for the PraxSoft Nutrient Sensors used for testing and calibrating of current and the new upcoming design.• Conduct research for upcoming federal and state studies and projects used in proposals for selected bids.• Train and supervise an Environmental Engineer undergraduate intern from the University of Central Florida (UCF) in technical writing, laboratory procedures, and created procedures for the PraxSoft Nutrient Sensors.
