Within the Master of Pharmacy course I have been enrolled in a unit called Professionalism in Action. This unit gave my team and I the opportunity to undertake a community project. My team chose to partner with Chinatown Pharmacy in Broome to educate and increase awareness of e-scripts benefits to patients in rural settings. We developed 2 resources in this project, an educational website and informative poster which displayed a QR code that linked directly to our website. The main goals of this project are to provide easy and accessible information for patients and improve script workflow within the pharmacy. At the end of our project reporting period we found that e-script use in the pharmacy increased by 12%. The partnership with Ben Lindquist, the pharmacist manager and staff of Chinatown pharmacy was a fantastic experience. I have profoundly increased my knowledge about e-scripts during my research throughout this project which has proven to help me not only in this project, but my growing career. It is important to be able to understand and optimise the use of the amazing health resources available to us in pharmacy. The project allowed me to further develop my skills in planning, risk management, time management, professionalism, communication and leadership. Overall this project was of great benefit for both the partnering pharmacy and my team in developing our skills as future pharmacists. This project covered many aspects of the PSA competency standards including: 1.1, 1.5, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 and 4.1. Show less As part of the Professionalism in Action unit I had to complete 2 broadening activities to provide insight into areas and skills I wish to further develop. My second broadening experience stems from my Volunteering at PCH, which has provided many valuable and rewarding experiences. Soon after I began, I realised how helpful these experiences are and how I can translate the communication and empathy skills I developed from encounters with hospital staff, patients, and parents into my early career as a pharmacist. I spend a lot of my time with the nurses in the post operative anaesthetic care unit and on the wards which has helped me gain a lot of understanding about communication. The public hospital system and nurses are something I’ve had very little experience with before my time at PCH. I have developed an understanding of how a public hospital operates like where patients go and why, the services and clinics hospitals provide and the wide variety of staff. I am constantly communicating with and assisting nurses in the unit. Although I’m not communicating with the nurses in a pharmacist capacity, I still have learnt to communicate with them in general, this experience will shape how I interact with nurses in future when I become a pharmacist. A challenge, yet very important learning curve I’ve taken from this role is the difference between empathy and sympathy. This has been a powerful self-learning journey. The patients I have encountered at PCH obviously differ quite variably from the people I see every day in the pharmacy, and it is a good reminder that you never truly know what people are going through before they walk through the door. I try to keep this perspective in mind now when dealing with patients in my own job and I believe it has made me a better pharmacy student. These experiences coincide with PSA Competency Standards: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 4.2. Show less As part of the Professionalism in Action unit I had to complete 2 broadening activities to provide insight into areas and skills I wish to further develop. The first broadening activity I completed was a multiculturalism and medication management workshop run by Dr Alex Balzarelli, an experienced general practitioner who specialises in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. In this workshop I learnt about the importance of culturally safe practice. Methods and strategies to achieve culturally safe practice were discussed, covering areas like; communication, approach and optimal medication management. I found this workshop extremely insightful and that it broadened my knowledge about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. It also provided a great supplementation to topics covered during my rural pharmacy placement in Broome. This enables me to provide a better understanding and care for a wider range of patients within the community and further develops my interest in rural pharmacy. This workshop coincides with PSA Competency Standards: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.6, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 and 5.1. Show less
