While dominant groups may erase memories and artifacts, the physical space enables resistance. This thesis explores the interaction between collective memory, urban landscapes, films, and resistance, using visual methods and qualitative analysis of films and interviews (mental maps). Comparing findings with history and urbanism, the thesis considers films as a major expression of past popular culture and mental maps as present social representations. In Mexico City's Historic Centre, a multi-temporal urban construction is revealed, where landscapes evolve yet coexist. The research identifies different types of landscapes—places of “Profane Heritage” tied to popular groups and spaces imposed by dominant power structures as official history. Show less

By… Show more As part of my PhD at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, I worked on a project exploring the interaction between collective memory, the perception of urban landscapes, and popular practices, using cinema as a methodological tool. The project aimed to understand how cinema can document urban transformations and preserve the collective memory of places and practices that have been altered or lost due to these changes. By analyzing historical films, we were able to map popular memories associated with spaces that have transformed or disappeared over time. Show less
