Master of Science - MS Applied Ecology and Conservation Merit

Following on from extensive field experience I felt it necessary to complement this with classroom based skillsets such as GIS analysis and statistical knowledge. My dissertation was on the effects of parasites on translocation projects working with the Seychelles Warbler Project and UEA on Fregate Island, Seychelles.

  • Experience

    • Anglian Water Bird Watching Centre

      Jun 2008 - Jun 2008
      Volunteer (Work experience)

My first true insight into nature conservation. I did voluntary work here for a year before June 2008 on weekends and 3 weeks during June itself and learnt how to work with tools (such as loppers and hacksaws) used in reserve management. Coppicing was regular and I also was taught about dry stone walling and working with livestock and there uses in land management.

    • Pannel Valley Ringing Group

      Jul 2011 - Aug 2011
      Bird Ringer (trainee)

My 3 weeks at Icklesham was spent gaining experience in order to move on from a Trainee permit to a C permit in bird ringing. I spent time getting to grips with reedbed bird species specifically working with high numbers of Sedge and Reed Warblers. The experience taught me how to deal with high pressure bird ringing and gave me a suitable booster from my prior experiences with bird ringing.

    • Spurn Bird Observatory Trust Ltd

      Aug 2012 - Sept 2012
      Volunteer Assitant Warden

I spent 5 weeks working with the Warden (Paul Collins) as I assisted him with bird ringing tasks as well as bird census work and also was tasked with removal of the protective equipment put in place for the nesting Little Terns earlier in the season with the resident Little Tern Wardens.

    • Bournemouth University

      Aug 2013 - Aug 2013
      Student Researcher

As part of a SERT (Student Environmental Research Team) project, a study was untaken into observing the effects of Ecotourism on the Tambopata region of the Peruvian Amazon. We set up remote cameras and each camera had a corresponding vegetation structure survey (as well as a hemispheric lense photograph of the canopy in order to gain data for a LIDAR based project run by seperate academic). Our results have shown that there is effects on animal activity with relation to tourist disturbance but also note that the more tourists the less poachers. Show less

      Dec 2013 - Mar 2014
      Student Researcher

Another SERT project run by Bournemouth University looking at the social feeding behaviour of Pied Avocets on Brownsea lagoon. The study is behavioural but also later in the study, we will look at food samples in the lab and can look at the reasons behind various feeding behaviours.

    • HEDGE Project.

      Jun 2014 - Sept 2014
      Warden

Heathland in East Dorset Grazing Enhancement (or HEDGE for short) is a conservation project by which cattle are used to graze areas of Heathland in order to increase biodiversity. Task include maintaining the heath via organic weed eradication, fence and border maintenance and moving lifestock among other activities. Alongside this I have been asked to create a bird survey in full to compliment the HEDGE project (this includes health and safety briefing and dealing with a non-specifically skilled task force). 30 or so bat and bird boxes have been located around the sites by my instruction in hopes to be able to monitor the success of a variety of species on the areas owned by the project. Experience has also been gained in various power tools such as hedge strimmers and brush cutters. Show less

    • Kvismare Bird Observatory

      Apr 2015 - Sept 2018
      Avian Field Ecologist

At Kvismare, I was charged with performing the Hooded Crow census. This is a 5 year census involving nest finding, monitoring and measuring of success rates through ringing. This role was mainly based in April and June, leaving May for me to head up the smaller projects around bird observatory, including the colour ringing of Savi's Warblers, Wetlands Census', Goose brood counts and Bird of Prey nest finding.I was also taught in the safe methodology of taking blood samples in adult and pullus birds when assisting with the Ortolan Bunting and Great Reed Warbler projects; both long ongoing studies. In 2018, I spent 3 weeks during the ringing season as one of the ringers in charge helping run operations and train some less experienced ringers. • Operation Wallacea

      Jun 2015 - Aug 2017
      Ornithologist

In Honduras, my main tasks as an ornithologist will be to perform point count's and bird ringing along standardized transects through the cloud forest of Cusuco National Park. The project itself aims at surveying the biome in many different area's in order to get a measure of its ecological significance. Through this we would like to get an economical valuation of the ecology and use this as a was of getting protection from encroaching plantations. The secondary purpose of me being there is to teach survey techniques to students visiting the field site. This means performing the census work to the highest standards in order to spread similar practise.A second stint in the summer of 2016 saw me promoted to field leader, performing and leading the ornithology surveys in the more remote western side of the park. The responsibility was increased again in 2017 to entail staff training. Show less

    • Getteröns Naturum

      Oct 2015 - Nov 2015
      Resident Bird Ringer

Working as the main bird ringer for monitoring of autumnal migration. I worked with resident ringers to run daily operations at the highest level of scientific quality, taking biometrics on migratory bird species.

    • Machan Resorts LLP

      Sept 2016 - Mar 2017
      Resident Naturalist

Employed as resident naturalist to an eco-resort in the Western Ghats of India. Roles included a general bird species diversity survey and tour guiding of guests, as well as a more specific look at some of the wintering species present and how they interact with the ecosystem and resident avifauna.

    • University of East Anglia

      Sept 2017 - Sept 2018
      Masters Student

MSc Applied Ecology and Conservation; Merit.Masters course taught in depth knowledge in skills such as GIS and Statistical Analysis using R. For my dissertation I worked on the effects of avian translocation projects on spread of blood parasites. From this I gained laboratory experience using PCR and gel electrophoresis.

    • Fregate Island Private

      Apr 2018 - Jun 2018
      Consultant Ornithologist

For my masters project I worked on Fregate Island in the Seychelles investigating the effects of blood parasites on avian translocations. I tested for avian malaria and avian microfiliria in Seychelles Warbler and Seychelles White-Eye which were both translocated to the island to assist in conservation efforts. My results showed no spread between or within either population indicating a lack of vector species for the island. During my stay I also assisted with work on the Seychelles Magpie Robin and helped in a Aldabara Giant Tortoise translocation to nearby Aride Island. Show less
