    • Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction

      Jul 1999 - Sept 2009
Corrections Officer, Case Manager, Warehouse Manager

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is a state run governmental department stressing the importance of rehabilitating those incarcerated, and the protection of the public. Throughout the years I was employed with this governmental agency I held three positions, and had worked at three correctional facilities which possessed three different inmate security levels. Most of my time was spent working at the Ohio State Penitentiary (a Super-Max level facility), here Ohio housed maximum security level inmates, death row, key inmates from the Lucusville Riot of '93, and Super-Max level inmate populations. The term Super-Max reflects the thought of inmates that are beyond maximum security levels, a sort of last stop, a place were you put inmates that no other facility could handle, and this in fact was the case here. I had also worked the Trumbull Correctional Institution (a close/ medium security institution), and at the Ohio State Penitentiary Correctional Camp (a minimum security institution). Some of the duties of positions I held were as follows;First as Corrections Officer was responsible for the supervision of inmates ranging from Super-Max to Minimum Security levels. Secondly as a Correctional Case Manager providing a critical connection between the prison system and social services. I worked in an advisory capacity with convicted criminals to help rehabilitate and reintroduce these individuals back into society. Though often compared to a parole or probation officer, my role as a case manager was not identical; my focus was on formulating a plan of action to guide each inmate through rehabilitation, during incarceration, and when they rejoined their community after their release. And lastly as a Correctional Warehouse Manager responsible for a multi-million dollar warehouse that supplied two institutions needed goods and services. This also included the supervision of various inmate work crews. Show less
