  • Experience

    • Legal Aid DC

      Sept 2004 - Jun 2006
Crowell & Moring Equal Justice Works Fellow/Staff Attorney

I tackled the issue of limited access to healthcare for underserved populations by using a three-pronged approach: education, direct legal services, and systemic advocacy. As a legal services provider, I helped underserved clients access the District of Columbia's health safety net program and Medicaid and supported organizations advocating for better healthcare access. I represented clients in fair hearings and appeals, negotiated medical debt settlements, and secured medical care for those denied coverage. I also trained legal professionals, community health clinics, and local health agencies to dispute coverage denials for Medicaid, Social Security, and the District of Columbia's health program. I was involved in settlement negotiations and compliance monitoring. Received two achievement awards for leading a team of agents, legal assistants, and attorneys in a nationwide anti-kickback investigation of four major makers of artificial hip and knee implants, which resulted in a settlement of $310 million. Also, I provided guidance on OIG administrative authorities and civil enforcement remedies to state Medicaid fraud investigators, Department of Justice attorneys, and state Attorney General offices.
