  I have had the opportunity to serve as a demonstrator and marker for the Environmental Geoscience course. This course focuses on exposing students to anthropogenic perturbations within various environmental systems by evaluating alterations in physical-chemical processes occurring at the Earth's surface. It offers case studies delving into topics such as groundwater depletion due to mining activities, ocean acidification caused by increasing concentrations of atmospheric CO2, acid mine drainage, and the potential risks and benefits of geological CO2 storage and unconventional gas production. The fundamental processes underlying these issues are outlined and both qualitative and quantitative assessments are made, utilizing methods such as mass balance analysis, reconstruction of groundwater flow patterns, and examination of changes in chemical reactions and reaction rates at the Earth's surface. The examination of temporal scales of current perturbations is also conducted within the broader context of environmental changes throughout the geological history. Show less
