Atmospheric Scientist | Climate mitigation and adaptation solutions | Sustainability | Terra.do Fellow |

  • Education

    • University of Leeds

      2002 - 2005
BSc Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology 2.1

Actividades y grupos:RMetS student conference organising committee 2006-2008. RMetS Associate Member My undergraduate thesis was the measurement of nitrogen dioxides, ozone and carbon monoxide in street canyons, tunnels and main roads in Leeds City Centre and Roundhay, using an instrumented van.I was interested in the spatial and temporal variation of these pollutants with regards speed controls, traffic lights, vehicle age and congestion.

    • University of Leeds

      2005 - 2009
Doctor of Philosophy - PhD Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology PhD

Actividades y grupos:RMetS Associate Member ICHEME Associate Member The title of my thesis was: "A Fast Chemiluminometric Sensor for Monitoring Ozone". I designed a novel sensor using a reaction cell made of 3-D printed components. The cell used a hydrophilic substrate to facilitate a reaction between chromotropic acid and ambient air. The resulting chemiluminescent reaction between the acid and any ozone released photons measured by a photomultiplier tube according to Beer-Lambert relationship.

Understanding the principles and methods of carbon accounting and reporting for businesses and the process of establishing meaningful reduction targets with David Jaber of Climate Positive Consulting.

    • Terra.do

      2023 - 2023
Learning for Action Climate Change Fellow

Actividades y grupos:Condors 6 Terra.do selects talented individuals who care about climate, takes them through an intensive online bootcamp taught by top experts and then exposes them to climate work opportunities (part-time/full/entrepreneurial) that need their skills.

    • Terra.do

      2023 - 2023
      ESG Fundamentals Certificate of completion
  • Experience

    • NORWEST HOLST SOIL ENGINEERING LIMITED

      Jan 1990 - Sept 1991
      Draftsman

I produced high-quality technical diagrams (by hand) detailing groundwork and geological features for client reports.

    • The British Library

      Oct 1991 - Jan 2001
      Administrative officer - Customer Services

Within the Customer Services team I was responsible for investigating and responding to customer inquiries from around the world and managing the customer records system.

    • PA Media

      Oct 2001 - Jun 2005
      News Library Coordinator (part-time)

I worked a weekend shift to strict deadlines, editing and transmitting PA News data files to other newspaper groups around the UK. In my first year, I also looked after the cuttings and image library.

    • University College Cork

      Jan 2010 - Nov 2010
      Research Fellow - Atmospheric Measurements

I worked at the Environmental Research Institute on a project to measure emissions from seaweed in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Galway. My responsibility was the modification of our atmospheric chamber to allow seaweed specimens to be exposed to gases and mimic tidal activity. I also handled day-to-day management of the Atmospheric Chemistry lab.

    • King's College

      Jan 2010 - Jan 2012
      Research And Development Technician

Working in the Geography Department, I had responsibility for the installation and maintenance of equipment as part of the ClearfLo project (see link) including ceilometers, weather stations, carbon dioxide sensors, and sonic anemometers. In addition, I was also responsible for the management of the field equipment stores and instrument workshop; training staff and students in correct use of equipment, and preparing health and safety paperwork.

    • SLU - Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet

      May 2012 - Jan 2013
      Research Engineer - ICOS

I managed six legacy field sites for measurements of the carbon-balance and worked on the integration and initial operations of two new field sites as part of the ICOS consortium. This involved a lot of trouble-shooting of equipment; re-progamming dataloggers in CR Basic, writing MATLAB scripts for automated data collection and initial analysis, plus physical changes to infrastructure and organising maintenance schedules.

    • University of Cambridge

      Sept 2014 - Jul 2016
      Research Associate - ChemSonde instrument

Working in partnership with SME's in Sweden and the UK, I managed a project to integrate miniature carbon dioxide sensors on weather balloons, and test prototype systems for atmospheric profiling. I took part in an STSM with SenseAir in Sweden, where I learned about sensor fabrication, testing and calibration.

    • Rocasolano Institute of Physical Chemistry

      Sept 2016 - Jan 2017
Postdoctoral Research Associate - ROFLEX instrument

I managed a project to revitalize an instrument that had previously been developed to measure atomic and molecular iodine. My responsibilities included; rebuilding the instrument and working on methods to increase sensitivity (ppt's), modifying older MATLAB scripts to produce raw spectra, and writing my own scripts in R to automate data collection and statistical analysis for presentation.

    • SLU - Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet

      Jun 2018 - Jan 2018
      Research Engineer - ICOS

I returned to Sweden this summer to help ICOS engineers and technical staff at the Svartberget Forest Research station. I was responsible for installing a new ceilometer for boundary-layer measurements, installation of a backup meteorological station, and building four new instrument enclosures for the latest eddy-covariance flux measurements to be carried out at Degero peat mire.

    • SLU - Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet

      Mar 2019 - Nov 2023

I was responsible for the day-to-day running of the Atmospheric/Ecosystem Station at Svartberget for ICOS Sweden. As the Principal Investigator for the atmospheric measurements, my goal was to promote the facility for making world-class measurements & encourage researchers to come & use the facilites. I forged partnerships with public & private sector stakeholders, SME's etc. to test new ideas & systems for greenhouse gas and ecosystem measurements at the station. I was responsible for the installation, maintenance, operations and data management of the ICOS and SITES instrumentation. This includes carbon-balance, meteorology, moisture and trace gas analysis. ICOS (Integrated Carbon Observation System), is a Pan-European measurement system for high quality and high precision greenhouse gas observations. SITES (Swedish Infrastructure for Ecosystem Science) is the national co-ordinated infrastructure for terrestrial and limnological field research.
