  Dissertation: "Metabolic scaling as a novel paradigm for biomimetic design"My research focused on studying and modelling metabolic scaling phenomena in artificially generated cellular systems across different levels of complexity (i.e., from single cells up to architecture of 3-dimensional cell aggregates), through a proper in silico-in vitro approach accounting for population dynamics and biological variability. On the one hand, I exploited advanced computational modelling and data analysis tools for guiding the design of experiments and extracting empirical parameters; on the other hand, biofabrication techniques as well as cutting-edge conditioning and sensing technologies were used for, respectively, crafting and testing the in vitro counterpart. The final aim was to define biomimetic design constraints (i.e., enabling cell constructs to hold scaling rules inherent of living organisms) for the development of computational and experimental cellular models having optimized predictive and translational power, with potential applications in tissue engineering and environmental sciences.
