  Working at North Dodge has been a great experience. I worked for this company long enough to move my way up to the front desk, interacting with dozens of people per shift. It's taught me the importance of social skills, great customer service, and taking initiative. Since normally I am the only staff present at the gym, I have learned to operate autonomously and ensure the lobby is clean and always looking its best.   Working at the Iowa Flood Center has helped me gain invaluable Hydrologic Modeling experience. On a weekly basis, I'd utilize ArcGIS to fix gaps in flood maps using flood insurance studies.   This experience allowed me to see firsthand the entire engineering process: how problems are defined, the best solutions are conceived, and then performing the work to justify the proposed solutions. It was eye-opening to see the importance of creating a project schedule and contacting useful people with specialized knowledge. When questions arose, long before any deadline we contacted people with different backgrounds who could tell us their thoughts on the issue. This also included the client so any fragmented pieces of the vision for the site or logistical questions could be resolved.-Worked with team in capstone class to design dams, weir, and habitat for Camp Courageous -Organized multiple site visits to map points of interest and observe challenges and constraints in person -Ran and compiled summary calculations document for all designs related to the project -Conducted HEC-RAS / flood analysis of site to determine capacity of control devices -Submitted weekly progress reports, attended bi-weekly client meetings, and recorded notes for each meeting -Researched hydrologic studies and best management practices to design erosion control devices -Aided in writing design report, constructing design sheets and presentation for submittal to client Show less

  My first teaching experience taught me how important it was to monitor my inbox and anticipate questions ahead of time. Lectures for the course occurred 3x per week which meant I had to review lectures ahead of time so I could respond to students immediately.
