The research also identifies additional factors such as income and employment, support systems, and the socio-cultural environment, that influence food security for LGBTQIA2S+ university students. Individuals’ lived experiences of food insecurity highlight the importance of an in-depth understanding of intersectionality and the complexity of identities in developing strategies to improve food access and thus decrease food insecurity. To my knowledge, the findings of this study represent the first evidence of community-based food studies research conducted with the guidance of both intersectionality and queer theories. Show less

Title: Value Chain Coordination and Local Food ProcurementAbstract: Public procurement of local food supports place-based agri-food supply chain development and also responds to growing consumer demand for nutritious, locally produced food. Value chain coordination (VCC), focused on building social infrastructure through collaborative relationships among stakeholders along the local agri-food chain, can facilitate the scaling of values-based food procurement and community resilience. While VCC initiatives have been gaining notoriety in the United States, there are few examples in Canada and, in general, research on the topic is limited. Our research addresses this gap by responding to a need identified by the Alberta Flavour Learning Lab, a multi-sectoral local food procurement community of practice consisting of institutional food buyers, distributors, processors, producers, researchers, NGOs, and municipal and provincial government representatives formed in the western Canadian province of Alberta (Beckie, Hedberg, & Radies, 2019). Members of Alberta Flavour wanted to learn about the potential of VCC to foster increased volume and availability of local food for their customers. In this research we present a summary of the literature review conducted as well as an examination of how VCC impacts the scaling of local food procurement through data gathered from key informant interviews and a review of three VCC initiatives situated in Mexico, the USA and Canada. The findings are germane not only to the North American context, but to procurement stakeholders more broadly by showing how VCC activities can be implemented to benefit collaborative advancement of values-based food systems whilst addressing some of the associated challenges of local food procurement. Keywords: food value chain coordination; agri-food supply chain coordination; vertical integration; vertical coordination; value chain analysis; food supply; food system; global food system; local food Show less
