  The New York Academy of Sciences selects about 1,000 high school students (aged 13-17) each year from around the world to become part of The Junior Academy to join a dynamic global network of students, peers and mentors. Students form a team of up to 6 members and work together on various challenges on the Launchpad, a unique online platform of the academy. Each team is paired with a STEAM professional as a mentor for the 10-week challenge. Most of the challenges are focused on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The challenges are conducted twice a year, from January to May and September to December. In addition to competing in global challenges, students gain research experience while developing skills such as communication, collaboration and leadership.The New York Academy of Sciences was found in January 1817. It is one of the oldest science societies in the USA. An independent, non-profit organisation with more than 20,000 members in 100 countries, the academy's mission is "to advance scientific research and knowledge; to support scientific literacy; and to promote the resolution of society's global challenges through science-based solutions".
