      Teller

I began my career at First National as a Teller at 114th & Dodge. I was excited to work for company that such a prominent history in the community. Working part-time as a teller gave me flexibility in my scheduling as I began my first years in college and I gained so much knwoledge about the Bank by working at one of its largest branches. I later transfered to our South Omaha branches to utilize my language skills in helping our large customer base of Spanish-speaking customers. I was energized by the long lines of customers on Fridays and Saturdays and fast-paced work environment. In May of 2005, I left the bank for three months to travel to Mexico for a summer study-abroad program. Show less

During my year of service, I worked as a teacher's aid and mentor in the classroom. The first half of the year, I spent my time in a kindergarten class helping little ones get acculturated to their new environment. For many of the childeren in the classroom, this was not only thier first experience in school, but also their first experience in an primarily English speaking setting. During the second half of the year, I helped out in a fifth grade classroom. I assisted with small-group study settings, and also served as a mentor in the class. Show less

The customers were always appreciative of the service I provided, and I became their go-to person for questions on their accounts. Show less

      ESL Driving Instructor

This was my second experience serving for AmeriCorps. This time around, I had the opportunity to help adults, from various countries, learn the "rules of the road" for driving in the state of Nebraska. Obtaining a driver's license can be a difficult task for non-native English speakers. I worked with these individuals to help them understand the information presented in the Nebraska Driver's Manual in preparation for their written and skills tests.

English as a Second Language Instructor

Working as an ESL Instructor was a very fulfilling and rewarding experience. As part of the Adult Basic Education program, I taught English reading, writing and speaking skills to adults from many different countries. I taught various literacy levels through out the years, and I enjoyed the different challenges of each. Throughout the quarter, I would assess students learning needs and learning styles and design activites and lessons to accomodate. It was so exciting to see the participants learn and grown in their language proficiency and I tried my best to design group activites and lesson plans to assist students in meeting their educational goals.
