      My PhD was in Teaching the Past, with Special Reference to Prehistory, in English Primary Education. I completed it part-time initially while working as a field archaeologist latterly working for the University and then English Heritage.

      I ran a team of 22 long-term unemployed people working to help primary and secondary schools in Hampshire make the best use of the historic environment in their teaching. The team produced ten teachers' handbooks over the three years of its existence.

      I worked as the Regional Education Officer for the South West between March 1988 and November 1995 when I took on a national role as Education Officer for Further, Adult, and Higher Education until September 1997. The post involved the writing, editing, and production of support materials relating to English Heritage properties and the wider historic environment; training teachers and student teachers; lecturing, and a wide range of coordination and partnering with educational authorities and other organisations. Between November 1991 and December 1992 I was seconded to be Acting Regional Administrator for the South West properties in the care of English Heritage. This included being responsible for Stonehenge generally and in particular at the so-called 'calendar events' a role I held for a three years. Show less

      ICCHS was a postgraduate centre offering five M Level programmes in heritage and museum related topics and with a cohort of usually some 20-25 PhD students. I set up the first ever MA programme in Heritage Education and Interpretation and carried out normal teaching, research, and admin roles within a university department.
