      Legal educator

Through helping the youth navigate the legal system I was able to grow my own understanding of the legal system. Figuring out upcoming court dates and identification dates were both major parts of my internship. Explaining charges and the potential consequences of said charges was an important part of my internship. I helped youth connect with legal aid lawyers and since many of the youth are unhoused, I was often the main contact for their lawyers. I would also attend docket court with the youth and would ask if their proceedings could be stayed for two weeks so we could find them a legal aid lawyer. I advocated for youth to be placed in extrajudicial sanctions programs instead of facing jail time. I helped the youth go to the police station and deal with outstanding warrants. When needed I had fingerprinting moved to more convenient locations for the youth. I helped the youth complete anger management and employment booklets to mitigate the consequences of their charges. I currently work part-time at the Dunn Law Library. I have learned how to file books based on the Dewey Decimal Classification and I often help patrons troubleshoot the printers and the scanners. I help students research relevant books that may help them in whatever projects they are working on. One of my favourite activities is updating looseleaf texts as this activity has taught me the importance of paying attention to detail to ensure that all pages are filled correctly

I am currently working as a relief staff member for the Phoenix Youth Shelter. At the shelter, I cook meals for the youth and ensure that the space is clean by cleaning the kitchen and taking out the garbage. I am interested in engaging with populations that the government often fails to support, and I enjoy helping these youth by increasing their access to the resources they need to thrive. I am currently working full-time as a key worker at Phoenix House. My main focus is connecting the youth within the program to helpful resources such as vocational training, educational programs, or volunteering positions. I am also committed to ensuring that all the youth who are in the program have valid government ID and access to income support.
