    • Phillips, Hager & North Investment Management

      Jan 2002 - Apr 2011
      Vice President

Phillips Hager & North was Canada's largest privately owned investment counselling firm with over $70 billion in assets under management. The firm was sold to the Royal Bank of Canada in 2008.My primary role was Investment Counsellor/Portfolio Manager for High Net Worth Individuals, managing pooled funds and segregated assets. My clients included individuals, corporations, foundations, trusts and estates. It was here that my interest in coaching and leadership development was sparked. I was propelled by an insatiable curiosity about what was important to the clients whose money we managed. What were they trying to DO with their resources? Fund retirement, educate children or support charitable endeavours? Of something else entirely different? This intense interest in how we could best meet our clients’ needs - financial, emotional and practical - lead me to seek more specialized training. As a holder of the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, I had good grounding in the financial aspects. I turned to Coaching and Motivational Interviewing training to help with the rest, along with research into motivation, effective change and human excellence. This focus resulted in long-standing relationships of mutual trust and confirmed my interest in the human side of the investment business. As Managing Partner of our Toronto and Montreal offices and Member of our Private Client Management Committee, I worked closely with four partners across our five offices to ensure we had the best quality and consistent practices for client service, investment management and employment opportunities for our people. My responsibilities also included compliance oversight for the portfolios and and liaison with our technology department to ensure our technology platform supported both our clients and our people at PH&N.
